1. 研究目的与意义
Ellipsis, as acommon linguistic phenomenon, appears in almost any language. Although theremay be some differences in the forms and techniques of ellipsis in differentlanguage systems, they all have the same original intention, which is to pursueeconomy under the principle of language economy. The grammatical phenomenon ofellipsis has been studied to varying degrees by all the major schools ofgrammar in the world. However, most studies only focus on the definition, classification or function of ellipsis, and there are few studies on itsmotivation and translation strategies. Therefore, based on the principle oflanguage economy, this thesis analyzes the motivation behind the ellipsis and itstranslation strategies in the process of Chinese translation, aiming to enablelanguage learners to have a deeper understanding of their mother tongue, orenabling second language learners to have a better grasp in the process ofsecond language acquisition.
Ellipsis isalways strongly related to certain contexts, which is a neighboring part of thetexts. There are two categories of ellipsis based on where it occurs and whereit can be recovered and understood: cataphoric ellipsis and anaphoric ellipsis. The former one means the omitted components appear in the upcoming context;whereas the latter one refers to the omitted components which have appeared inthe proceeding context. In this thesis, we mainly focus on the cataphoricellipsis.

1.1definitionof ellipsis
a large numberof linguists of various schools have been trying to define ellipsis accordingto their own understanding. in the oxford advanced dictionary, ellipsis isdefined as the act of leaving out a word or words from a sentence deliberately, when the meaning can be understood without them. according to quirk et al.(1972), ellipsis is strictly defined as ''grammatical omission'' in contrast toother kinds of omission in language, which also include the phonological loss, word formation loss and semantic omission.
